Yoga is a multifaceted discipline originating from ancient India, with roots dating back thousands of years. Here are numerous styles of yoga, each with its own emphasis and approach. Some popular styles include:
- Hatha yoga focuses on mindfulness, breath, posture, and meditation and has many benefits for your mental and physical health: Strength. Hatha yoga’s poses target all the body’s major muscle groups in the upper and lower body. Balance. Holding poses works the small stabilizer muscles in your body that help you balance.
- Vinyasa Yoga Flow is a creative form of yoga where poses are linked together with the breath in a flowing sequence. The beauty of Vinyasa yoga is the variety. There is no standard sequence in Vinyasa yoga, so the style, pace and intensity will all vary depending on the teacher.
- Ashtanga Yoga – The Sanskrit word Ashtanga translates as Eight-limbs, referring to the Eight-limbs of yoga as outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Pattabhi Jois, daily asana practice is necessary to make the body strong and healthy which can then allow the mind to be steady and controlled.
- Bikram Yoga is a system of hot yoga, a type of yoga as exercise, spread by Bikram Choudhury and based on the teachings of B. C. Ghosh. Bikram yoga has been shown to improve lower body strength, lower and upper body range of motion, and balance in healthy adults.
- Kundalini Yoga activate your Kundalini energy, or shakti. This is a spiritual energy that’s said to be located at the base of your spine. As Kundalini yoga awakens this energy, it’s supposed to enhance your awareness and help you move past your ego. Sometimes, the practice is also called “yoga of awareness.”
- Iyengar Yoga is a form of yoga as exercise with a focus on the structural alignment of the physical body through the practice of asanas. It differs from other styles of yoga in three ways: precision, sequence and use of props. Precision is sought in body alignment in every asana.
- Yin yoga is a style of yoga in which poses are held for 3-5 minutes on each side. Instead of focusing on building strength, Yin focuses on flexibility and relaxation by targeting deep connective tissue. Yin Yoga is suitable for all levels.
These styles may vary in intensity, pace, focus, and philosophy.
